Light Silk

The silk I used for most of the solvent transfers is silk chiffon. It is so light and airy and after cutting it up into pieces to print on, it seems to weigh nothing at all. Because it is so thin and fragile, it doesn’t have a lot of surface area and I think this is why the solvent transfers appear so light.

I like the lightness of the prints, it gives them a delicacy and a ghostliness. It feels like perhaps the spirit of the birds, left behind. A residue of their existence.

The sea transfers are on a different type of silk, called ‘habotai’. The transfers released more of the image onto this silk, probably because it is more dense and a little thicker (it is still very light though). The habotai silk is more shiny though, feels a little more synthetic and lacks the airy lightness of the silk chiffon.
